CLINICAL SCIENTIST - RESEARCH PROFESSOR (AC.05.3) Location: Johannesburg, South Africa Organization: School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand Overview Research Professor (fixed‑term, 5 years, renewable based on performance) – AC04/AC05. The role focuses on any of the following research areas: Cardiology – hypertension and cardiovascular prevention Endocrinology – obesity and diabetes Immunology – cellular immunity related to infectious diseases or broader topics Lung disease – childhood and/or adult acute or chronic respiratory diseases Oncology – especially the nexus of cancer and infectious diseases Maternal and child health – stillbirths, premature labour Infectious diseases – antimicrobial resistance, hospital‑acquired infections, emerging infections, pandemic threats Other South African health‑care priorities (excluding HIV and TB) The position strengthens leadership in clinical research and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct and lead original scientific research; publish and disseminate findings. Supervise PhD and Masters students, as well as other researchers, including joint staff employed by the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH). Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses (maximum 15 % effort). Participate in academic assessments. Qualifications Specialist degree in the relevant field (sub‑specialty preferred). PhD is advantageous but not mandatory. Experience sufficient to be appointed at least at the level of associate professor, based on faculty staffing and promotion criteria. South African applicants must be registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa. Non‑South Africans may be considered but will be exempt from patient service. Eligible for appointment as a full professor at the University of the Witwatersrand or on track to be promoted within three years. Strong record of original academic production at an international level, including leadership in research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution and external funding. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Description of previous grants secured as a principal investigator. Research plan (3‑5 pages). Up to 10 publications (PDF) for assessment. Employment Terms Fixed‑term, limited to five years. Renewable subject to research throughput (average of at least six manuscripts per year as primary/senior author), postgraduate supervision and acquisition of significant grants. Salary and conditions are governed by University of Witwatersrand terms. Pensionable annual salary at the level of a senior consultant in GDoH. Applicants must restrict clinical practice to a maximum of one day per week. Seed funding will be provided in the first two years.
