Overview Job Title: Professor/Associate Professor – Science Education (specialization in Chemistry Education) (Re-advertisement). Faculty: Education, Senior Phase and Further Education & Training (SPFET). Location: Mowbray Campus, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa. Job Type: Permanent. Annual Salary Package: (incl. Medical Aid rate based on principal member only) To be confirmed. Number of Positions: 1. Job Purpose To teach undergraduate Chemistry and Chemistry Curriculum Studies. Lead the science cluster in the SPFET department and the Faculty of Education in general, conduct research and mentor others. Contribute to the faculty goals in teaching, research, community engagement/administration, and Teaching Practice. This post has been created for the purpose of raising the standard of scholarship in the field of Science Education in the Faculty. The purpose of the post is to provide academic leadership to build capacity by initiating relevant research projects, strengthening research capacity, providing mentorship to novice researchers (staff members) and supervising postgraduate students up to doctoral level. The appointee will contribute to the spectrum of academic functions including teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising students on teaching practice, curriculum development, academic administration and conducting research in the subject area of Science Education. The focus of this appointment is to strengthen postgraduate research capacity across the faculty therefore the incumbent will engage with researchers in all departments to seek opportunities for multidisciplinary projects. Key Competencies / Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience Doctoral degree in Chemistry Education or Science Education with specialization in Chemistry, Chemistry or Chemistry Education as a major subject at Bachelor's level. A relevant teaching qualification. At least ten (10) years' relevant experience in teaching in higher education of which three (3) years must be at Senior Lecturer level, comprising relevant academic management experience. Recipient of research awards and grants. Demonstrable track record of publications in accredited and peer-reviewed journals over the last 5 years (nationally and internationally). Post‑graduate students supervised to completion relevant to the Education field (preferably in the field of SFET). Experience in supervision of students on teaching practice. NRF rated. Adequate knowledge of South African CAPS requirements. Experience as an external examiner/moderator at master's and doctoral levels. Experience in curriculum development. Knowledge of the HEQSF processes. Proven evidence of academic and research leadership qualities/high stature in the field nationally and/or internationally. Previous experience in a similar position or at an equivalent level. Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities Coordinate and teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Chemistry/Science Education and/or related fields. Oversee and contribute to capacity development in the department/faculty. Lead, conduct, and promote research in the respective department/faculty. Provide appropriate academic and administrative leadership. Academic assessment and development. Academic administration. Curriculum and programme development. Participate in quality assurance activities in the department/faculty. Research supervision of students on teaching practice. Community engagement and involvement in extracurricular activities. Coaching and mentoring of others. Develop and maintain linkages with other institutions and communities of practice. Engagement and building partnerships (networking with schools and other partners). Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department. Essential Skills and Attributes Knowledge and experience of hybrid models of teaching and learning (face-to-face and online). Excellent teaching skills. Excellent organizational and planning skills. Good presentation skills using different technologies and software. Ability to teach Chemistry and Science Sciences.
