Description of Duties Under the general supervision of the Student Life Coordinator, serves as the editorial advisor for the Leeward CC student publication, Ka Mana’o. Recruit, train, and advise the student employees and volunteers. Be the primary resource person to the student publications staff in terms of general journalism, news skills and ethics, production functions, and others. Works closely with the Student Life Coordinator to structure and develop thematic and content-based focus of Ka Mana’o. Solicit and screen from the general student body publishable student works that include artwork, poems, drawings, literary stories, lyrics, digital signage, and discussion articles that focus on issues of student interest or concern. Advises and assists the student publication staff in meeting their responsibilities as embodied in the Board of Student Communications (BOSC) charter and its bylaws, individual position descriptions, and responsible editorial policy. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with relevant academic programs of the College that would maximize student participation and readership in Ka Mana’o and enhance the quality of the publication. Coordinate the production of the printed Ka Mana’o with outside vendors in accordance with fiscal policies. Assists in the development of the budget for Ka Mana’o. Manage the KaMana’o website and social media platforms. Responsible for playlist management for campus digital signage for Student Life content. Duties may include evenings, weekends, on- and off-campus as required. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism, English, Creative Media, or Communications or related field and 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for journalism; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of news production and journalism management demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with student publications and journalism ethics and practices. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of student publications and advisement of journalistic staff. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. Able to work evenings, weekends, on- and off-campus as required. Desired Qualifications Possession of Master’s degree in Journalism, English, Creative Media, Communication or related field. Experience with web design, content management and file upload. Knowledge of art as it relates to design and layout composition. Functional knowledge of managing a publications budget and staff supervision. Ability to provide or coordinate staff training including: Ethics, rules and responsibilities of student press, news reporting skills, and legal concerns and University policies and procedures associated with student publications. Experience operating a computer using Mac OSX, Microsoft Office Suite for Mac and Adobe Creative Suite Software to include (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver).
